Great Wheatley Road, Rayleigh

Utility Installation Projects worked with EDF Energy to install an emergency additional 132kV supply serving the Rayleigh / Southend-on-Sea area over a length of 2 km.

Client: EDF Energy Networks

Contract Value: £440k

Services Provided

This project involved network infrastructure project management, excavation works and cable pulling, traffic management, permit management, cable jointer support, temporary works and joint bay excavation. UIP also laid drawings while liaising with the local public about progress and potential disruption.

Work included the installation of a 132kV cable to support network infrastructure and emergency work to install an additional 132kV supply serving the Rayleigh / Southend-on-Sea area over a length of approximately 2 km.

The project included the installation of 8 x 160mm and 4 x 88.9mm ducts in 1.2m wide x 1.8 m deep trenches and oil to poly transition joint bays 12 m long x 3 m wide alongside the existing supply network in the carriageway through residential areas and across fields.

Challenges & Solutions

The location of the project, sitting within a residential area, presented some difficulties as the road was narrow and met with a dead end. The project required effective management regarding time frames, costs, site safety, expectation management, and communication with the public. The team from UIP worked hard to minimise any impact on the residents surrounding the site.
